à la recherche des livres perdus

[with apologies to Proust for the awful rip-off of his title] Not sure I'm going to make it all the way through this, but I like the way Xiao Han starts this off. He's looking back at the books he read 30 years ago, inspired, in a somewhat oblique way,...

salaries can't match GDP

It would seem that, in Guangdong at least, salary growth won't match GDP growth. Not good news considering all the talk of inflation, and I don't see why this phenomenon would be limited to Guangdong. This is from Nanfang Daily: 居民收入为何涨不过GDP?市发改委主任潘建国:这是体制问题...

legal aid?

So I opened up The Beijing News/新京报 as part of my continued efforts to get more real-world exposure to written Chinese (beyond menus and road signs, of course), and the first headline that grabs my attention is this: 北京将建司法救助基金 Beijing will establish...

comfort

One key aspect to studying, and something I've been lacking over this winter holiday, is a comfortable place to study. Even before I decided to all but abandon the university-supplied big box of 麻烦 computer and just plug in the laptop, the computer desk...

ah, just because...

Just because I'm using Chinesepera-kun for the first time and enjoying the added ease of access to written Chinese its giving me (it's soooo much quicker than a dictionary), here's another story, also from The Beijing News/新京报: 女子坠楼亡 居民绕路走 Woman falls...

bad press for Yanqing?

Uh oh. Seems like some people are bringing shame on my beloved Yanqing. [Note: This time using Chinesepera-kun, my dictionary, and nciku all together] 本报讯 (记者张汉宇)近日,很多前往延庆龙庆峡景区观看冰灯的读者致电本报热线称,龙庆峡景区周边管理十分混乱,交通指示牌不明确、私设路障、问路收费等问题显 著,给前去游玩的市民增添了很多的不愉快。对此,延庆县相关部门表示,他们将对交通指示牌予以更改,但私设路障及问路收费的状况很难管理。...

chinesepera-kun

Partly because I should be studying, and partly because I wanted to check out the Firefox add-on recommended here, I opened up Nanfang Daily and the first article I saw was about an oil spill on the Xijiang. Yes, Guangdong has very imaginative, poetic...

nothing to say

lzh tells me this guy's a famous university professor who writes somewhat similarly to Lu Xun, that his university doesn't like him because he's too honest (like Lu Xun). Well, unlike the maths teacher who's reference for lzh's boss' son I had to translate...

爹 and 娘

I've been wondering for a while about the origin of the Chinese words 爸 (ba, dad) and 妈 (ma, mum). Why? Well, in films set as late as the sixties the words 爹 (die, dad) and 娘 (niang, mum) are more commonly used. lzh tells me 爹 and 娘 are the older words....

八年

Well, first of all, congratulations to South Africa. It's good to see the World Cup back on the right side of the equator. But more importantly: Today is my eighth chinaversary. Eight years ago today I arrived in China for the first time. In Changsha,...
